Last July, I spent three weeks in a small village near Orhei, and it changed the way I think about my own country. I had seen the project advertised on a youth website. The aim was simple: a group of twenty young people would help to restore the old village library, which had been closed for nearly ten years. I joined because I wanted to be useful and, honestly, because I hoped to meet new people before leaving school. The first days were hard. We got up at six, carried books from damp rooms and painted the walls in the heat. Some of us complained, and I admit that I was one of them. 'It is not what I expected,' I told Andrei, our group leader. He smiled and replied that nobody expects to enjoy the beginning of a long job. He was right, though I did not say so then. What surprised me most were the villagers. Every afternoon an old woman, Mrs. Ecaterina, brought us warm plăcintă and told stories about the library when she was a girl. Thanks to her, the work stopped feeling like a duty. We started to ask questions, to listen and to feel responsible for the place. By the second week, children came to watch us, and some even helped us arrange the shelves. When the library finally opened, the mayor made a short speech, and then something unexpected happened: a boy of about eight borrowed the first book. I had never been so proud of something so small. If I had stayed at home, I would have spent the summer on my phone. Now I am planning to organise a similar project in my own town next year. I would advise everybody to try volunteering, but only if they are ready to work hard. It is not a holiday. However, it gives you something that no holiday can: the feeling that you have made a real difference. Although I was tired and covered in paint, I came home happier than ever before. Andrei says that I should write a report for the school website, so that more pupils can hear about it, and I think I will do it soon.
